2nd Annual Art Auction

Join us for the 2nd Annual YES Art Auction tomorrow!  There will be artwork available for live auction purchase from Kindergarten through 5th grade.  Bidder registration is from 5:30-6:00 and the cost if $5 for a bidding paddle.  Bidding will start promptly at 6:00.  We are raising funds for the technology fund!  You won't want to miss this event!!! 

Out Of This World ART!

Second and third grade students just finished the "outer space art" unit and created planets and rocket ships! 

Second graders used colored pencils, chalk, charcoal and construction paper to create the planets.  They learned basic shadow and highlight techniques to make their planet look three-dimensional.  

Third graders designed their own rocket ship and used tempera paint to fill in the color.  They added warm colored streams for the fire during blast off!

Kente Cloth

Fifth grade students learned African art and Kente Cloth's.  The Kente Cloth is a type of fiber art that is native to the Akan ethic group of South Ghana.  Students learned about the symbolic colors and patterns used to create the cloth.  They used reduction-printmaking techniques to create their own version of a Kente Cloth. Tall Tulips

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA for one of the professional development days.  If you've never been there, you should definitely visit!  Its a great art resource right in our backyard!  You can see real artist working and visit their studio space.  One of the artists I got to meet was Matthew Johnston, a painter.  I used his paintings of "Tall Tulips" as inspiration for this project.  First grade students loved learning about a local artist! I showed them pictures of Matthew Johnston's studio and a few samples of his artwork.  Check out their interpretation of Tall Tulips below!   

Kindergarten Selfies

I love to document the growth of my students through projects.  Kindergarten students drew a self-portrait on the first day of school, and second self-portrait in March.  Wow, they sure have grown as artists!  It's amazing the difference a few months can make.  Check out some of their work below! 

Careers in Visual Art

One of the goals at Yowell Elementary School is to help our students to become college, career, and citizen ready.  It's never to early to start planning for the future and asking big questions like "What do you want to be when you grow up?"  So many of my students LOVE art class and I want them to know they have options!  Check out the careers in Visual Art bulletin board that's on display in the art room now! 

Talent and Art Show

Come see the amazing art and fabulous talent show performers in the 8th Annual Talent & Art Show tonight at 6:00 at Yowell Elementary School!  This is a WHOLE SCHOOL art show.  There are almost 700 pieces of art on display, and 16 performing acts! You won't want to miss this fun night.  See you there!

Sailboats and Seascapes

In third grade, students learned about the many different types of landscapes.  They compared landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes and the similarities and differences of each.   Using tempera paint, students created a multi-step seascape collage that demonstrates understanding of background, middle ground and foreground in artwork.  

Check out thoes sailboats in the middle ground!  Where would you like to sail off to?! 

Mexican Mirrors

4th grade students learned about radial design and symmetry in art during this project.  They used talavera plates from the Mexican culture as inspiration for their own art.  I love the bright colors!  The hallways look ready for spring time! 

Keith Haring Movement Figures

Second graders studied the artist Keith Haring and movement in art.  Keith Haring first started making art in the subways of New York City, using chalk.  He is most known for his simple figure images and showing movement in art using lines. 

Students used construction paper, glue, and sharpie marker to create their artwork. Each students made a series of 3 mini movement figures.  Check out the students interpretation of Haring's work below!
